Katie Butler is a consultant and evaluator. She founded the GeoLiteracy Project in 2021. Katie has a heart for nature and a head for science. She is at her best when solving particularly tricky problems that require innovative scientific know-how, expert mediation, and leadership intervention.
Katie is an environmental scientist and geographer who has been evaluating environmental programs and mining environmental data for more than 25 years. She started her career investigating the mysterious drainage of a large central Florida lake. She developed the first-ever monitoring and evaluation plan for an internationally protected wetland site in the Moroccan Middle Atlas mountains. She led the US Environmental Protection Agency’s oversight effort to determine what went wrong in the Flint, Michigan, drinking water crisis and also led the oversight effort to develop strategies for improving drinking water services in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Katie has worked with nonprofits on strategic planning and evaluation and has spoken on evaluation and leadership to national groups.
Katie holds a deep belief that teaching people about how the Earth works is the best way to help them understand how we fit in and how we can solve environmental problems.
She holds master’s degrees in environmental engineering sciences and geographic information sciences.
